If you are planning to visit, study or work in Illinois, you have come to the right place. We will assist you to get acquainted with life in this Mid-West state.
For those of us in Illinois and the neighboring states, please make this website as your one-stop resource and make new connections by joining the network. We are promoting the spirit of 1Malaysia throughout this region and beyond.
The Aidil Fitri Open House 2010 was a huge success. More than 500 people turned out, including Malaysian students, professionals and their families. They came from all over Illinois, as well as Tennessee, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana and Michigan. The day started with morning showers but by the time the event started at 12 noon, it turned out to be a nice cool day...an early sign of Fall Season.
The registration process went on smoothly and we have managed to get more members to join this association. The event started with a welcoming speech from the President of 1MAI Ikram Ismail, followed by a speech by the Director of Malaysian Students Department Dr Roslan Jamaludin.
Soon after, MC Athiqah Roslan announced the Baju Raya contest, which was participated by about a dozen children under 12 years old. It was fun to see the kids parading around in their traditional Malay costumes.
Then it was eating time. A tasty menu of Nasi Minyak, Rendang Daging, Ayam Masak Merah, Jelatah, Nasi Himpit, Lodeh and Kuah Kacang was served to the guests. In the background, the tunes of vintage Hari Raya songs were playing, creating a real Hari Raya surrounding.
At 1:30pm, the silat team of Silat Gayong USA headed by Sam SM Salim began their performance at the lawn outside the hall. It was surreal to see the fight, which included a knife and a parang combat. We were amazed to see Americans performing the silat, which is our very own Malay form of martial arts.
At 2pm, contest winners were announced. This includes the Baju Raya contest, Kueh Raya as well as Kueh Traditional contest. The Kueh Raya first prize winner went to Malissa and the winner of Kueh Traditional went to Baya Wanchik. Congratulations to them and the kids.
The event continued with musical performances by our very own guitarist, Nasser Mahmud accompanying a group of Malaysian students singing Malay songs, including a nice rendition of Cahaya Aidilfitri (BDB). Nice job guys!
Finally, it was time to say goodbye. The cleaning up started at 3pm. It was a huge, joyful and memorable event which is the first time for us to organize with MSD. Thank you to the 1MAI committee members and MSD staff for their hard work to make this event a successful one. We are proud to serve the Malaysian community, especially the students who miss 'berhari raya' at their kampongs. By having this event, we hope everybody is happy to enjoy the Hari Raya food as well as meeting their friends in one place. View your photos at the Photo Gallery.
